New video from The See See

Longtime Shindig! favourites The See See mark their debut US single on Sundazed Records, 'The Rain and The Snow', by releasing this promotional video. Their psych-folk pop still hits the spot, and this song hits the streets on coloured 7" vinyl on January 26. Click, watch and enjoy!

Focus live in High Wycombe

FOCUS
SATURDAY JANUARY 26 2013

@ THE ARTS4EVERY1 CENTRE, DESBOROUGH RD, HIGH WYCOMBE, BUCKS HP11 2PU

The first of the 'big gigs' at the Wycombe Arts centre will launch not only the new venue but 2013 itself in spectacular style, as the one and only Focus - Thijs Van Leer, Pierre Van Der Linden, Bobby Jacobs and Menno Gootjes- bring their annual dose of progressive neo-classical rock and roll mayhem all the way from Die Nederlands to South Bucks.

Expect probably the most riotous show ever performed by an all-instrumental band (bar the yodelling of course) featuring such joys as 'Focus 1, 2, 3 and 4', 'House Of The King', 'Sylvia', 'Black Beauty' and the inevitable 'Hocus Pocus'. The first of hopefully many touring shows to be performed in the Greater Hall of the Arts4every1 Centre (the former St John's Church). They've done 'gigs' before, but this is a true event!

Tickets are £17 in advance from Wegottickets, Ticketweb, Stargreen, Counter Culture and Ruby Moon.

Tour News - Matthews Southern Comfort

Original lead singer with the seminal FAIRPORT CONVENTION Iain Matthews returns to the stage playing material with his following band, the UK country-rockers MATTHEWS SOUTHERN COMFORT.

Moving to London from his native Scunthorpe in the mid-60s and fronting the short lived UK surf/harmony outfit The Pyramid, releasing 'The Summer Of Last Year' on Deram, Iain McDonald dropped the second I from his name and soon found himself in Fairport Convention after being spotted by Ashley Hutchings. He left during the sessions of third album Unhalfbricking (having fronted the band first with Judy Dyble and then Sandy Denny). In 1969 supported by most of his old band mates Iain issued a solo album under the name Matthews Southern Comfort, which harked back to his recent past, before forming a solid band around the same name and releasing Second Spring and Later That Same Year in 1970 and 1971. Further embracing American folk-rock and country-rock in the mould of Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, The Youngbloods and other notable West Coast hippies Matthews Southern Comfort gained a surprise #1 hit with a cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’.

Band friction saw Matthews quit to record solo material in a similar vein prior to signing to Elektra with Plainsong, finishing what his previous group had started, whilst as Southern Comfort the remaining guys soldiered on for another two albums. Moving to America Matthews enjoyed a long and varied career that saw him veer off into all kinds of styles and genres from pop and jazz to electro-pop and new wave. Now he returns to the source material that allowed him to spread his wings.

Exhibition - Stamford Hill mods

Exhibition - Stamford Hill mods: the genesis of Marc Bolan
Hackney Museum, 7 November 2012 - January 2013

50 years ago the photographer Don McCullin took pictures of the 15 year old Mark Feld and his mod friends in Stamford Hill for Town Magazine. In 1965 Mark changed his name to Marc Bolan and went on to be the pop icon of T-Rex fame.

This exhibition looks at early mod culture, fashion and music in Stamford Hill in the 1960s. There are memories from people who grew up there and remembered the clothes they wore, the places they went to, the scooters they rode and their friendship, or not, with the young Mark Feld. Ths display includes a 1962 two tone Vespa scooter personalised by Eddie Grimstead, the scooter dealer to all the mods in East London as well original clothing, magazines and records of the time.

Opening Times:

Tues, Weds, Fri 9.30am - 5.30pm, Thurs 9.30am - 8pm, Sat 10am - 5pm. Closed Sun, Mon And Bank Holidays

Happening the club, November edition

The ‘Happening’ clubnight has now established itself as the grooviest place to sample the delights of the Shindig! universe. The world’s leading, most dedicated magazine for 1960s and ’70s music, the Happening website is the modern day equivalent of Shindig! - an online magazine for retro-classicism-inspired new music, clothes and events. A joint operation in conjunction with Sweet but Deadly Promotions, Happening has become its own little rock’n’roll haven. Come meet, greet and party with like-minded souls ’til your head explodes with delight!

Live Bands:
THE NOVEMBER FIVE
Debut album ‘If You’re Satisfied You Are Dead’ is out Monday, November 5th! Creating a rock'n'roll noise that's made when MENSA collides with ASBO... "The November Five combine the driving sneer of Earl Brutus, some of the atmospherics of the Arcade Fire if they weren't twig-stroking Canadians, and some very British bombast - in The November Five's hands, guitars do, very much, squall" say The Quietus. "If you like the incendiary music of The MC5, The Stooges, The Birthday Party, Jim Jones Revue or The Cramps then go download their debut single, ‘Closure b/w Flame’, and look out for next single, ‘Awake in a Daze b/w It's Not Enough’, hitting the stores (real and online) very soon. Even better still, go watch then live as you will not be disappointed in the slightest" say Shindig!.

THE HYPNOTIC EYE
The Hypnotic Eye are a South London-based five piece Flower-Punk band, who play abrupt, slightlydelic garage, haunted by Brill-Building pop & Musique Concrète. The Hypnotic Eye take their name from George Blair’s cult classic horror film. Known for their prismatic dress and engaging performance, the group are fronted by 19 year old, Grace Lightman. The band’s debut-LP “The Optical Sound of The Hypnotic Eye” is complete, but unreleased. An independent limited 7” pressing of “Marianne”, featuring Rhys Webb & Coffin Joe, taken from the album, is available.
A trio living within the dark heart of on the edge post-psychedelia. Dark Bells spin a beguiling web of haunting yet melodic sounds built on the bricks of post-punk with the atmosphere of an act you might have found on 4AD in 1983. Their focus is creating a truly unique sound inclusive of soundscapes. Dark Bells are a band where each instrument works with and around the others creating something unique that sets them aside from anyone else. Innocent at times, truly captivating at others.
Dark Bells

Plus Resident DJ Phil Istine will spin your world via ’60s psychedelia, garage, beat, and general vintage rock’n’roll wondermints!

Rolling Stones live in London and New Jersey

The Rolling Stones have finally put those rumours to bed by announcing four 50th anniversary shows, in London and New Jersey.

They made a video (see below) and announced it via their Facebook page - two shows at London's O2 Arena on November 25 and 29, and two at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on December 13 and 15.

They released a statement, in which Mick Jagger says "Everybody loves a celebration, and London and New York are two good places to do it in". Keith Richards elaborated, saying "The waiting is over. I've always said the best place for rock and roll is on the stage and the same is true for the Stones. I'm here with Mick, Charlie and Ronnie and everything is rocking. See you very soon!"

Prices for London are an eye-watering £106-£406 (causing some consternation amongst fans). Tickets for London go on sale this Friday and for New Jersey next Friday. Full ticket details can be found here.

Abrahma European tour

Formed in 2005 under the moniker Alcohsonic, the Parisian quartet epitomised the ideals of rock ’n' roll. Blending the classic American ’70s sound with blues, southern roots and just a hint of the modern Seb Bismuth, Nicolas Heller and the brothers Colin attempted to set Europe on fire. Their flame burned hot but far too bright and after five years, one LP and a scathing trail of live shows sharing the stage with the likes of Brant Bjork and Cactus, their course was run. But like a pheonix rising from it's own ashes Alcohsonic has been reborn as Abrahma.

Their latest album Through The Dusty Paths Of Our Lives is a self made monument to what might have been and an explosive first example what is yet to come. Five years on the road has hardened the sound and forged the new songs like iron in flame. Gone are any hints of ’70s revivalism, buried beneath thick sludgy riffs and thundering basslines. Six hands play as one with the voice of an angry angel lighting the way. Catch a glimpse before the sparks begin to fly.

The band were signed within weeks of self releasing their debut EP, the H-Bomb EP. Picked up by Chicago's Trouble in Mind Records (Ty Segall, Fresh and Only's, Hex Dispensers, etc.). Any number of bands cite 60's Texas psych as an influence, but rarely does a group actually capture what made those bands special. Following their debut EP also on Trouble In Mind, The Night Beats have expanded on the bedroom immediacy of their first recordings to create an LP that perfectly captures and modernizes the hallucinogenic and exhilaratingly demonic aura of bands like The 13th Floor Elevators and Golden Dawn. With blazing guitar work and a razor sharp rhythm section Danny Lee Blackwell and company mutate conventional chords & progressions into a mind-blowing sonic sprawl. The record reels you in with 2-3 minute pop songs like 'Ain't Dumbo' and 'Dial 666,' forging a landscape that then throws you into a chaotic journey of jams a'la 'Dewayne's Drone' and 'Little War in the Midwest' that bend and meander but never overstay their welcome.

The Fingers reform for home show

One of the UK's first psychedelic groups, Southend's  The Fingers, are reforming for a special hometown gig at the Riga Music Bar in Westcliff-on-Sea.

Probably the first group to wear hillbilly hats and braces and vests, they still pack a mighty punch with this original six-piece line-up, three of whom have worked extensively with Mickey Jupp in various bands including Legend. Members of The Fingers have also worked with many well known artists such as Billy Fury, Suzi Quatro, Chris Farlowe, Frankie Ford Flaco Jiminez, Robin Trower, Rhet Stoller, and Cliff Richard. They also recorded, as Daddy Lindberg, the classic 1967 psychedelic song 'Wade In The Shade'.
